Understanding installation types
There are two types of aPriori Professional installations:
First-time installation
Update (or upgrade) installation
There are also two types of aPriori Professional updates:
Maintenance release update
Major release update
An aPriori first-time installation is the Installation of an aPriori Professional major release on a machine that contains no previous aPriori releases. First time installation steps are:
Plan the deployment
Install:
a. Prerequisite software
b. A database
c. Your aPriori clients
Test in non-production environment to ensure that your installation is complete
Move to a production environment

A maintenance release is a minor update for a specific, previously installed major release. A major release installation is the installation of a new a Priori major release on a machine that contains the previous aPriori major release. The installation steps for updates are like the first-time installation steps. The major difference between first-time and update installations are:
For update installations, you typically do not need to install prerequisite software. However, you may have to update to a newer version of the prerequisite software.
For maintenance updates, you typically do not have to update the database.

Note: Updates can only occur directly from the previous major release.
If the release that is installed on your machine is older than the previous release, you must first upgrade and test each intermediate release. You cannot skip intermediate releases. For example, you cannot install a 2019 R2 version of aPriori Professional as a major update to a 2018 R2 version of the software that is installed on your machine. In this case, you must install and test the 2019 R1 version before you install and then test, the 2019 R2 version of aPriori Professional.
You also cannot just go through the motions of upgrading an intermediate release and then immediately proceed to the next upgrade. aPriori Customer Support can help you move from an older release to the current one.
