Defining draw direction for casting and injection molding
The draw direction indicates the direction in which the part mold will be opened. aPriori selects draw direction automatically. To manually select draw direction, use the Draw direction tool in the Component Viewer tool bar. This tool is available only for Casting and Injection Molding Process Groups.
To define draw direction manually
1 Click the Draw direction tool in the Component Viewer tool bar.
The following things change in the Component Viewer:
The mouse cursor turns into the Draw direction tool icon.
The part’s datum planes are displayed.
The suggested draw direction is displayed.
The Draw direction options selection box is displayed.
2 You can select the following options:
aP Select (Auto) – This option button is selected by default indicating that draw direction is automatically determined by aPriori.
User Select – This option button indicates that draw direction is selected manually by you.
Show Parting Line – Check this checkbox to show the mold parting line.
Advanced/Simple – By default you define draw direction in Simple mode with the Advanced button available. As you move your mouse over GCDs (planar surfaces, holes, curved walls, or the default datums) the proposed draw direction is shown as an arrow on the window. Selecting a GCD changes the draw direction.
If no suitable planar surface or hole is available to define a draw direction, click the Advanced button to define draw direction in spherical coordinate system. The values for Azimuth and Zenith for the parting line set by aPriori are displayed. To enter new values, do one of the following.
Click Select. As you move the cursor over the component, the Azimuth and Zenith values change. Click the left mouse button to select new values.
Use the up and down arrows in the Azimuth and Zenith fields to change the values or type in the new values.
3 Click Apply to set the new parting line. Click the Simple button to return to the Simple mode.
4 As you move the mouse cursor over the part, the axis, straight edges, datum planes, and flat surfaces that you can use to draw direction are highlighted. The suggested draw direction is displayed for the highlighted item. Highlight the item that you want to use as draw direction and click the left mouse button.
